Somalia's Shebab destroy grave of Sufi cleric

(AFP) – Oct 19, 2009

MOGADISHU — Somalia's Al Qaeda-inspired Shebab group on Monday destroyed the grave of a prominent Sufi cleric in the central town of Galhareri, firing in the air to disperse an angry crowd, witnesses said.
A group of heavily-armed Shebab fighters raided the graveyard where Sheikh Ali Ibar, a respected Sufi cleric who died before the 1991 collapse of the central government, was buried and smashed his mausoleum with sledgehammers.
"Using sledgehammers and hoes, the Shebab militiamen destroyed the grave of Sheikh Ali. We tried to stop them, in vain. They fired shots in the air to disperse the crowd," local elder Moalim Abdullahi Alim told AFP by phone.
"They destroyed everything of the little mausoleum and also ordered some Sufi scholars from the nearby mosque to leave," said Abdi Mukhtar, a resident who witnessed the scene.
The Shebab, who have controlled much of central and southern Somalia since the middle of last year, have already desecrated several holy Sufi sites.
"The purpose for destroying those graves is to prevent people from overstepping the red line in their respect for the dead, which risks becoming actual worship of the dead," said Sheikh Ibrahim Hassan, a local Shebab leader.
Sufism is dominant in clanic Somalia, where Muslim saints are often also clan founders, but its leading clerics have voiced concern that hardline Islamist groups such as the Shebab were slowly eradicating it.
It emphasises the mystical dimension of Islam and includes practices considered as idolatry and innovations in the conservative Wahhabi sect adopted by the Shebab, which recently declared its allegiance to Al Qaeda.

Insurgents target Sufi sites in Somali townSomalia's Shabaab destroy mosque & Sufi grave

Al-Shabaab group is waging a stubborn insurgency against the fragile U.N.-backed Somali government

MOGADISHU

(Reuters)

Hardline al-Shabaab rebels have destroyed a mosque and the grave of a revered Sufi Muslim sheikh in central Somalia after shooting in the air to drive away local protesters, residents said on Monday.

Al-Shabaab, which Washington says is al-Qaeda's proxy in the failed Horn of Africa state, has targeted Sufi holy sites and religious leaders in the past, saying their practices go against the insurgents' strict interpretation of Islamic law.

The rebel group is waging a stubborn insurgency against the fragile U.N.-backed government of President Sheikh Sharif Ahmed.

" They destroyed the grave of Sheikh Ali Ibaar and our mosque. They also knocked down our Islamic university "
Somali local elder Hassan Ali Witnesses said residents in the small town of Galhareeri tried to stop al-Shabaab fighters late on Sunday, but the rebel gunmen opened fire in the air, forcing everyone to flee.

"They destroyed the grave of Sheikh Ali Ibaar and our mosque. They also knocked down our Islamic university," local elder Hassan Ali said.

"We are now just squatting among the trees on the outskirts of the town. We do not know where to flee."

Fighting in Somalia has killed 19,000 civilians since the start of 2007 and driven another 1.5 million from their homes.

Al-Shabaab insurgent group has shocked many Somalis, who are traditionally moderate Muslims, with its stern version of Sharia (Islamic law,) which has involved amputations for thieves -- and most recently the whipping in public of women for wearing bras.

Al-Shabaab fighters have also banned movies in territory under their control, as well as forbidding musical telephone ringtones, dancing at weddings and playing or watching soccer.

Some residents, however, give the rebels credit for restoring a degree of law and order to parts of the country.

Ali Yasin Gedi, vice chairman of Mogadishu's Elman Peace and Human Rights Organization, told Reuters that Sunday's attacks in Galhareeri were a violation of the freedom to worship.

"It is against Islam to violate human rights," he said.

Somali rebels give AK-47 to best young koran reciter

Sat Oct 17, 2009

KISMAYU, Somalia
(Reuters)

The 17-year-old winner of a Koran recital and general knowledge competition organised by al Shabaab rebels in Southern Somalia got an AK-47 gun, two hand grenades, a computer and an anti-tank mine as prizes.

The runner-up in the month-long competition aimed at 10-25 year olds, a 22-year-old, received an AK-47 and ammunition at the ceremony, where the rebels urged parents to allow children to learn how to handle weapons and fight against the enemy.

Somalia's 18-year conflict now pits al Shabaab and Hizbul Islam rebels against the U.N.-backed government of President Sheikh Sharif Ahmed.

The radical al Shabaab, seen by Washington as al Qaeda's proxy, controls most of Southern and Central Somalia and has also been targeting Somali children in neighbouring Kenya for radicalisation and recruitment to their ranks.

Sufi group backs more African Union troops in Somalia
By the CNN Wire Staff

STORY HIGHLIGHTS

Group favors African Union deploying more troops in Somalia
Ahlu Sunna Wal Jama rallies in capital of Mogadishu
Al-Shabaab follows strict Islamic rules, has ties to al Qaeda

Mogadishu, Somalia (CNN) -- A Somali militant group wanting to rid the war-torn country of an al Qaeda-linked movement welcomed Saturday the African Union's decision last week to expand its peacekeeping presence in the country.

Members of the Ahlu Sunna Wal Jama militia -- showing off their power by brandishing a small arsenal of light and heavy weaponry -- denounced Islamic militant group Al-Shabaab during a press conference in the capital, Mogadishu, and announced their support of the AU's decision to add at least 2,000 more troops to the 6,000-strong force targeting such groups.

Al-Shabaab, which has pledged allegiance to al Qaeda, controls much of southern Somalia and portions of Mogadishu. Ahlu Sunna Wal Jama, which follows the Sufi form of Islam, turned against it after Al-Shabaab fighters destroyed the tombs of several revered leaders of the Sufi Muslim group in 2008.

Al-Shabaab claimed responsibility for bomb blasts earlier this month in Uganda, which came just two weeks before an African Union summit there. More than 70 people were killed in the attacks. The group said the attacks were in retaliation for Uganda's troop contribution of the AU's peacekeeping operations in Somalia, known as AMISOM.

Al-Shabaab follows the strict Saudi Arabian-inspired Wahhabi interpretation of Islam, rather than the Sufi Islam of many Somalis.

Al-Shabaab and Ahlu Sunna Wal Jama, which have a power-sharing agreement with the federal government, are rivals and have battled each other for nearly two years.
The United States is backing the African Union's mission in Somalia. Some observers say Somalia needs a political, rather than military, solution.

The AU patrols just a few streets in Mogadishu and protects facilities belonging to the weak central government, including the presidential palace. The country has been virtually lawless since 1991, when the government of President Siad Barre, was overthrown.
